Measuring Guide for Square Bay Windows

Pro Tip
Roller blinds are typically not recommended for square bay windows unless you have especially wide corner mullions. This is because the fabric width is narrower than the overall blind width, leaving some areas of glass uncovered. This is especially noticeable with blackout roller blinds.

What you’ll need: A metal tape measure, a pencil, and a piece of paper.

Step 1

Use a metal tape measure to measure the width of each window from corner to corner. Take measurements at the top, middle, and bottom of the window, and record the smallest value.

Step 2

How to Calculate the Width for Ordering Your Blinds

If your windows have handles or vents, measure in millimetres how far they stick out from the window frame. You’ll need to include this measurement when determining the ‘depth’ of your blind in the next step.

Combine these two measurements and record the total as Dimension ‘A’. If there are no handles or other obstructions on the window, simply use the blind ‘depth’ as Dimension ‘A’.

The ‘depth’ of your selected blind type is listed in the table below. This depth represents how far your blind will extend from its fitting point. You’ll need this measurement to ensure you account for the correct space when measuring.

Make the Final Deductions for the Width of Each Blind

Centre Blind: Roller Blinds Only – Deduct 4mm from the width and order as ‘Exact Size’.

Centre Blind: All Other Blinds – Deduct 10mm from the width and order as ‘Exact Size’.

Left Blind – Deduct Dimension ‘A’ from the width and order as ‘Exact Size’.

Right Blind – Deduct Dimension ‘A’ from the width and order as ‘Exact Size’.

Step 3

To measure the drop of your blinds, simply measure from the top of where you want the blinds to hang, down to where you want the bottom to rest (typically the windowsill, if applicable). Take this measurement at least three times across the bay window and use the smallest result.

For Vertical Blinds only, subtract 12mm from the measurement to prevent the fabric louvres from touching or dragging on the windowsill.

Please note, all blinds for your bay window should be ordered as ‘Exact Size’.
